Super Casinos in Manchester Rejected by House of Lords
Last week, the UK Culture Secretary Teresa Jowell lost her shirt when England’s House of Lords rejected her proposals for 17 new land based casinos. The development is a huge blow to Manchester’s hopes of hosting the country’s first Las Vegas-style casino but gives hopes to Blackpool that its casino bid may yet triumph.
The super casino plans, which were defeated by a 123-120 vote in Parliament’s upper chamber, had also called for 16 smaller casinos across Britain.Without the approval of both the House of Commons and House of Lords, the government’s plans will need to be redrafted, since they cannot proceed as they now stand.
Casinos in Britain, not Las Vegas style, current number about 140 small and medium sized casinos, located principally in major towns and cities in England.
