UK Bans Online Gambling Ads
The UK government has dealt a blow to about one thousand online gambling sites after it declared a ban on offshore Internet gambling companies from advertising in the UK starting September.
According to the new rule, any online firm based in gaming hotspots such as Costa Rica, the Netherlands Antilles and Belize will not be able to market in the UK, either online, on TV, or in newspapers and magazines.
Culture Media and Sport minister, James Purnell, said he makes no apology “for banning adverts for websites operating from places that don’t meet our strict standards.”
Companies based in low-tax locations such as the Isle of Man, Alderney and Gilbratar will be allowed to continue advertising.
The government said it’s still considering the status os firms based in Antigua, where online casino giant Bodog operates, and the native Indian-owned Kahnawake reserve in Canada.
